ARTS 1301-Group Art Project

GOTHS, Peasants, and Rebels

Gothic art has nothing to do with black clothing and an alternative attitude, but rather gothic art carries a tone of barbaricness. In relation to Renassaince art and its classical attributes, gothic art  is more unconfined and does not follow asthetic proportions. Gothic art was birthed in approximately the 12th century out of the Medeival art movement and faced heavy criticism from supporters of the early Renassaince period which attempted to revive a more structured religious based world of art. It is imporatant to be mindful that the end of the gothic era birthed the start of the print medium revolution. As seen in the early example from 1455 entitled Death comes for the Cardinal.

Gothic art started in sculptures and architect. The characteristics of the early sculptures included elongated humans bodies that were stiff but still bore a natural image.
Here is an example of the elongated naturalistic human figures used in gothic sculptures. This is carved out of the Chartres Cathedral in1220.

Gothic paintings appeared almost half a century after their architectural counterparts. This is a miniture of the Reconstruction of the temple of Jerusalem, created by Burgundian in 1460. It shows the artist of the gothic time period used the focal point and how they made their worl symmetrical with the use of scale. We can see in the lower right corner how the people look larger than those in the lower left, thus drawing the viewers attention to the right of the scene.

Renaissance architures is very comprable to gothic architecture. Both followed in the Roman's footsteps in form and fashion. Gothic architecture was a big deal during the Medieval time period and carried an emphasis on cathedrals and town halls. Gothic art was praised in important places like these as seen in the Reims Cathedral, in France. The stain glass can also be appreciated during this time as seen in the picture below; this is an inside view of Reims Cathedral.
